Three “New Media” Artists

There is one more video in this series of interviews with “new media” artists. It’s of Paul Hertz, but Paul - and I mean this in a good way - needs to be encountered on his own. All three of these videos were shot by my good friend Gretchen Hasse and are unfortunately a bit mangled by YouTube. They were carried out in conjunction with the first art exhibition I ever put together: a “new media” exhibition called Structural Elements (for reasons I can’t remember) and held in a large warehouse space some three years ago.

It’s still an honor to have worked with all the artists in the exhibition. I worked with a few of them again (Casey Farina, Debra Tolchinsky) and those were great extensions of what started here. If I win the lottery, I’m opening a “new media” gallery. Although I like the idea of the roving exhibition space to open different possibilities. To be honest, there’s a good argument for having weekend exhibitions. A great, well-publicized opening with a good crowd, Saturday and Sunday stragglers, and then in truth you are pretty much done. The rest of the month is like running an obscure museum.

Now if I could do 6 weekend exhibitions a year, then I’d get back in the game.

Especially if I could get the spaces for free. After all, this is new media. We’re not going to sell anything. Any ideas? Oh, and there’d be music, dance and poetry, too.

If you find the artists in the videos interesting, check out their Web sites:
